Another difficult day for us today with all the marlin hear at the moment we had 2 trips today both booked for bottom fishing but our clients were very happy with their day out and caught some nice sting rays (12 ) and some small reef fish.

30th July
After our great success of 3 marlin in 5 trips we were hoping today to make it 4 from 6. Our first trip today was booked for bottom fishing which is very difficult when you know there are so many marlin out there but our policy to give our clients what that they want is important to us. It was a successful trip with every one catching something and we finished with 6 assorted rays some lizard fish and 3 turtles.
The afternoon trip was a part charter, on these trips we take a maximum of 4 fishermen and fish with 9 rods to give our clients the best opportunity available to catch there dream, fish without paying for a full charter. Our clients were Bernd and Roland from Holland along with petr from the check republic. While sitting watching the lures and talking which is how you spend most of the time while trolling I was shocked to see a huge bow wave caused by an enormous fish travelling very fast straight at the lure on rod no 7 which is the rod that we share. Although it seemed like slow motion probably within 2 seconds the rod had bent in half and line was streaming from the reel. At this point in the trip this rod was the property of Petr Popik who is a guide and bailiff on a cat fish fishery in the check republic. So we got him in the chair and the fight began. This was a truly enormous and very angry fish but after about an hour of very hard work by Petr the fish was at the back of the boat. This is the tricky bit, with the double line safely on the reel and just as I touched the leader the fish shook its head, the hook came out and the fish almost without a care in the world just swam away, so officially this is classed as a capture but I must admit I felt a bit cheated and very disappointed that I didn’t get to hold and tag this super fish.

A nice Blue Marlin
29th July
Another success today for the blue marlin 3. The lucky fisherman today was John Theunissen from Holland but I don’t think he thought he was very lucky after 45 minuets in the chair he was exhausted and needed a lot of encouragement to finish the fight, a lot of people have no idea just how tough these fish are, after just over an hour John had won a tough battle and a good fish of 650lb was tagged and released. It only took a couple of hours and a few beers until john had recovered. Well done John I am sure that’s one fish you will never forget.

After a well deserved day off yesterday it was back to work and what a start. With 3 of our very regular clients, Bernd, Freak and Laef we were hoping for plenty of action and we never had to wait long until we had a double strike from 2 blue marlin so with Laef in the chair it was Bernd who was fighting his fish standing up. After about 15 minuets unfortunately Laefs fish was lost so we got Bernd into the chair not a moment to soon for Bernd and after another 40 minuets of fighting he was rewarded with his first blue marlin, a nice fish of about 200k-425lb which was of course successfully tagged and released. Congratulations Bernd on the capture of a very well deserved fish your certificate will soon be on its way from the billfish foundation.

With a lot of fish hear at the moment all the boats left this morning knowing that any body with luck on their side could win the competition. Once again a lot of fish showed up with 11 blue marlin and 1 white marlin being caught today. Willem Scheffers and friends that had chartered the boat for the competition 3 days were a little unlucky as we seemed to spend the whole day watching boats very close to us hooking marlin. Over all it was a very successful competition with 26 marlin between 33 boats, our position at the finish was 8 overall and second of the charter boats.
25th July
After a very successful day yesterday with a lot of fish everyone left this morning knowing they still had a good chance. Unfortunately for us we seemed to return to our tricks of last week with 2 failed contacts from blue marlin and perhaps even more disappointing a white marlin although seeming interested and following a lure for some distance refused to take it. Over all a quieter day than yesterday with 4 marlin being released but there are still a lot of fish out there as most of the boats reported missed contacts or sightings of blue marlin. Tomorrow is another day lets hope the fish are still there and go and win this competition.
24th July
Today was the first day of the annual 3 day pourto rico fishing competition and with 33 boats entered we were all hoping the marlin were ready to eat. This year for the first time ever the size limits and points system are geared towards releasing the fish which is excellent news for the fish and us at blue marlin 3. This is the first time that you can get more points for releasing a fish than you get for killing one unless the fish is over 300k. Because unlike all the other boats our tag and release policy is for the benefit of the fish and not to increase profits or win prizes we are now competing on a level pitch. In the past we had to catch twice the amount of fish as anybody else to have a chance of winning. For the 3 days of the competition the boat has been chartered by 4 Dutch clients and the first day was a great success all round with 11 blue marlin being caught and released between the 33 boats. On a day when all the fish had to be released every one was hoping for small fish as the points are same regardless of size and for most boats this was the case, but not us, just after lunch we hooked a big marlin, with most of the fish today weighing between 100k and 150k and delt with quickly (aprox 30 mins) it was only us who had to battle for well over an hour with a fish of over 250k but I suppose if you go fishing you might as well catch a big one. This is the first fish our client has ever caught and he had no idea how hard he was going to have to work but he made an excellent job of it despite being shouted at slapped by his friends and ordered what to do for the whole time, well done congratulations on catching such a magnificent fish. Hopefully tomorrow you can do the slapping.

At last today we managed to hook a marlin but still not quite well enough as after a run of about 500m and a 15 minuet workout for our young client the fish managed to escape, very bad luck for the young man as I no he had been dreaming about catching a marlin for a long time, maybe next time.

As you can see we make our clients have a good time whatever fish they catch. Although we had another disappointing day with the marlin we did find some small Atlantic tuna, I think these little fish are the reason the marlin are not hungry.

21st July
Although we are getting 1 or 2 contacts from marlin every day we see to be having trouble hooking one properly, all the other boats report the same story which can only indicate that the fish are not really hungry and mealy playing with the lures, hopefully this will change in time for the competition which starts on the 24th. We did have some fun today with dolphins and some small Atlantic tuna as well as a fair sized skip jack.

20th July
After yesterdays poor show we were glad that both trips today were trolling. Only about half an hour into the trip this morning we had a good contact from a blue marlin but after a run of about 50m the fish dropped the lure and was gone. After checking and repositioning the lure we never had to wait long before we had another contact on a different rod, the same thing happened again but this time after about 100m, these fish can be so frustrating. On the afternoon trip we saw a lot of dolphins and some tuna jumping a short distance in front of us but when we arrived at the scene the tuna had dropped back into the depths, and although we tried, the fish refused to return to the surface. We did manage to catch 2 Atlantic and a skip jack.
19th July
Both our trips today were booked as bottom fishing which was a bit of a worry because the bottom fishing for the last few weeks has been quite poor. We had my friend Bernd Jan on both trips and he got the day off to an excellent start by catching a barracuda of about 15lb in the first 15 minuets. Unfortunately it was a good start to an ordinary day and although there were plenty of reef fish the only other fish worth a mention were a couple of good sized rays.

After a for us a rare blank day yesterday we made up for it today with plenty of skip jacks and a more positive run from a marlin. The marlin was on unlucky Bernds rod and although we had time to get him in the chair and see some spectacular jumps (by the fish not Bernd!!) the fish was soon gone so another good but unlucky day for my friend.

plenty of skip jacks
17th July
We had a strange day today and spent nearly the whole day dolphin and whale watching we just couldn’t find the end of them. Although they are nice to see they can be very frustrating when you are trying to find fish. So the only action we had today was from a playful but certainly not hungry marlin and one missed contact from a skip jack.
16th July
We had two part charters today and on both trips all our clients caught at least two fish each, this is impossible on any other trip on any boat in Puerto rico but by only taking four clients we can make it a reality. With good friend and regular client Bernd Yan and Tim on this morning it was always going to be fun. Bernd is probably the most unlucky fisherman in the world, he is good and does every thing correctly but struggles to catch fish and today was no exception, while every one was catching skip jack tuna the first three that Bernd hooked came of the hook while being lifted into the boat but he got there in the end. There seems to some marlin around but they are not in a very aggressive mood as was proved again today by another very half hearted contact maybe its because there are a lot of skip jacks and the marlin are having it to easy at the moment. The afternoon trip was much the same and Mick from my home town in Essex had some good fun with these tough little tuna. thank you to every one on the boat today we had two really good fun trips.

a lot of skip jacks

After yesterdays success I must admit that we were a little disappointed that the family that had chartered the boat for today decided that they wanted to go bottom fishing. As we at blue marlin put our clients wishes first off we went to the reef where we all had a very enjoyable day and caught some good sized sting rays and a moray eel. Thank you Leon we look forward to seeing you again in November.

We had another part charter today so it was off trolling in search of a marlin, and we came very close as a short time into the trip a marlin appeared behind one of the lures, there is nothing like this for getting your heart racing. The fish had three very half hearted lunges at a very big lure taking 2 or 3 meters of line each time, then the fish disappeared but within seconds it took a different lure and pulled about 50m of line from the reel before it disappeared for good. With every one now in a very expectant mood we continued the trip and it wasn’t long before we had some more action. We had spent some time investigating some suspicious looking birds when we hooked up three obviously good sized fish unfortunately one was lost quite quickly but the others turned out to be albacore tuna of 40lb each. These are the first albacore tuna to be caught hear this year by anybody and it also means that we have now caught 6 different species of tuna this year and were the first boat to catch yellow fins, big eyes and albacore. Congratulations to every body on board today.

We were trolling today on one of our part charters. On these trips, to give our clients more chance of catching a fish we take a maximum of 4 fishermen and fish with 9 rods. As more people get to hear about these trips they are becoming very popular unfortunately no body has told the fish and although we did see a marlin and a lot of over fed skip jacks we ended the day with only one of the smallest tuna species, a melba tuna. Lets hope tomorrows trip brings our clients more success.

We started the last day the tournament with our famous ice hockey coach Hans Zach on board again hoping to finish the job that he started twice yesterday. this however was not to be and apart from 1 very quick contact we and all the other boats had a very slow day.
I would like to thank Hans and wish him luck in the coming hockey season and I am sure it wont be long before we see him again, maybe next time we can realise his dream.
I would also like to thank the Royal fishing club and wish them continued success with all the good work they do with children
10th July
On board today we had the German national ice hockey coach Hans Zach. What a start within 15 minuets of leaving the harbour we had a double strike from blue marlin. One fish was gone almost as quick as it came but the other appeared to be well hooked so with Hans in the chair and all the other lines out of the way the fight began. this was obviously a very big fish as with a very strong and fit Hans and as much pressure as we dare apply the first run took over 600m of line. We continued to play the fish for just over an hour and got to within 50m before the fish through the hook and won its freedom. There appeared to be no reason for this loss but on inspecting the lure we found that there was no marks or damage at all indicating that the fish was only very lightly hooked. We continued the trip trying to console Hans but being a true sportsman he realises you cant always win. We had only just started the trip so still had plenty of time for another marlin and at 3 o’clock we saw one behind the lures, it moved between the lures as if it was trying to decide which to take then bang it grabbed a lure on a 50lb rod and when it realised it had made a big mistake the fish screamed of at incredible speed, at about 400m from the boat it made some spectacular jumps, unfortunately during this acrobatic display the fish landed on the line and broke it so the fish was gone. An incredibly unlucky day for Hans who has dreamt about catching a marlin for years and today was in the chair twice and through no fault of his own both were lost.

Marlin hook up
9th July
On this the first day of the tournament the results were very disappointing because although there were a lot of sightings and contacts none of the 4 boats caught a marlin. Hopefully tomorrow will be better.
8th July
We had a bottom fishing trip today so off we went a little bit concerned because the fishing has been pretty poor for a couple of weeks now. Although the fishing was not the best we have had we did manage to catch a few good sized sting rays and some reef fish.
Tomorrow we start a 3 day fishing festival organized by the German Royal fishing club who do an amazing amount of work for under privileged children encouraging them to fish as they feel like me that fishing is way of life not just a hobby and it can make you into a much better person. The club is supported by a lot of famous people including various sports men, pop stars, models etc. There are 4 boats involved and it has been organized by the bluemarlin3. With some reports of marlin sightings over the last few day lets see what tomorrow brings.

After a well deserved day off it was back to work today looking for another marlin and with 3 Irish clients on a part charter we were not disappointed as about 90 minuets in to the trip we had a double strike from 2 blue marlin. Very bad luck for Will as after only about 2 or 3 minuets the fish he was fighting managed to throw the hook and was gone, which left us with one on the hook unfortunately but probably due to the erratic work buy the angler in the chair the fish made a series of spectacular jumps and managed to turn and land on the line causing it to break so this fish was also lost, so an exiting but very disappointing afternoon.

It was the second charter with James Rasmussen our famous Danish rock star today and after some reports of marlin contacts yesterday we left the harbour in a very hopeful mood. After a short while our hopes were fulfilled with a very fierce hook up from a big dorado, within seconds another rod buckled and a white marlin leapt out of the water, so we were now fighting a big dorado and a very angry white marlin. Unfortunately the marlin had taken a very small lure on a 30lb rod and after a very fast run of about 200m the small hook pulled out of the fish so bad luck but James was still fighting his dorado which weighed in at 11k or 23lb. After lunch while we were talking about what could have been with the white marlin, a blue marlin appeared behind one of the small lures on a 50lb rod but after a short run the line went slack and the fish was gone but not for long and the outrigger on the opposite side of the boat was hit very hard and the fish was on. So with James who is very nearly 71 years old but very fit settled in the chair the battle began. With only 1 half hearted jump about 400m from the boat we had not seen the fish so had no idea how big it was, but as the fight went on we realised this was a very big fish. James really showed us the meaning of hard work and stamina as the fight lasted 2 hours and 45 minuets, when we eventually got the fish to the back of the boat the size of it amazed every one onboard and even after such a long fight the fish was still very strong and was successfully tagged and released, we estimated the weight at 370k or 820lb but on arriving back in the harbour and seeing a fish that had been brought in and weighed at 120k I think our fish was a lot bigger than we thought as I am quite sure that the fish I had been holding on to an hour before could easily have eaten the smaller one, a real monster. Well done James you really deserved a look at that wonderful fish I look forward to trying with you again at the end of the week.

We had good friend and client James Rasmussen back today for the first of 2 charters. James is a very famous Danish pop star from the 1950s and is still working very hard to this day. His ambition on this holiday is to catch a white marlin to complete his billfish hat trick, so of we went searching but all we managed to find for James was a dorado and a skip jack tuna. There was however 1 marlin released today and 3 other sightings by private boats which is the first reports of marlin for some time so the signs are good, lets hope tomorrow will be good for James.

skip jack tuna
3rd July
It was back to bottom fishing today with a bit of trolling to start in search of some skip jacks. The tuna seem have gone and it looks like they took all the bottom fish with them so apart from a few lizard fish it was a very slow day.
2nd July
We had Richard for his last day today and once again he was joined by Yvette and Dave so we were hoping for a repeat performance of Sunday when they had a great day catching big eye tuna. When Yvette turned up this morning we realised how much of a battle she had with those tuna as she was covered in bruises from fighting the fish. Unfortunately you cant catch fish of a lifetime every day and today was no exception and although we had good and memorable day we managed to catch only the 2 smallest tuna species, melba and Atlantic tuna. Thank you for your custom and I look forward to seeing you all again very soon.
1st July
Once again we went in search of tuna but found only whales, dolphins and birds but on returning closer inshore we had a hook up from a good sized dorado which unfortunately managed to escape just behind the boat but we still weren’t finished as when we were well on the way back in we raised a white marlin which although it seemed quite interested in our lures couldn’t be tempted, maybe tomorrow.
