Atlantic Tuna

Atlantic Tuna

I don’t think it will ever stop amazing me how quick the weather changes hear, today was almost perfect and our clients were a bit unlucky loosing some really big sting rays and a few more Atlantic tuna but they did manage to catch 3 on some very light tackle.

Unfortunately it was back to some horrible weather including heave rain today but as you can see our young client was happy with his small sea bream.

Blond Ray

Common Ray

It was back to work today after some really bad weather and we caught a few nice fish, including a big blond ray, some moray eels, octopus, reef fish and an unusual mackerel type fish known as a chicharro for our client Angelo van Blitterswiik, which after checking could be a new boat record.

Just when you think you are getting somewhere the weather has gone mad and we had to cancel today’s trip because of very high winds. I shouldn’t moan really as this is only the third trip we have had to cancel this year.

Angel Shark

Angel Shark

At last we had some proper weather today and it showed in the results. It was the third trip today for Stewart Roberts from England and at last he broke his duck with a good sized Angle shark, we was however beaten by Tommy his son who had a sting ray of about 50k. Some good sport was also had by Mike De Jong from Holland who had a north Atlantic tuna on a light 12ft rod.

Lizard Fish

Lizard Fish

With the wind still causing us some problems we tried a new reef today with some success and a lot of bad luck. Our photo today is Daren from England with a Lizard fish. We also caught some big Mackerel (about 2lb) each, sea breams. Octopus and assorted reef fish. Unfortunately the small fish (bogue) which we use for bait to catch Barracuda and Atlantic Tuna were all eaten off the hooks on the way up to the boat before we had a chance to send them back down on the correct tackle, we did get a couple of Barracuda to the surface on the light rods but were unable to land them on such light tackle.

Round Ray

Round Ray

With the wind still causing us some problems getting the boat positioned properly we had another fairly difficult day. Our regular client Mr Laslo from Holland had a round sting ray of about 30k (65lb) and Niki Knight from Hastings had to do a lot of work to land a common sting ray of about 80k(175lb) on an 11ft uptide rod with only 20lb line. Well done Niki I am sure that’s 1 hours fishing you will never forget.

Moray Eel

Moray Eel

All of us at bluemarlin3 would like to wish all of our clients, past, present and future a merry Christmas and a good new year. We were back to work today after our annual holiday but unfortunately and unusually the weather hear in Puerto Rico seems to have taken a turn for the worst. Our 4 Dutch clients however had a good day although the fishing wasn’t the best and caught some reef fish and moray eels. Lets hope for a change in the weather and the fishing tomorrow.

28th November

After Wednesdays success we had another go today and although we found plenty of whales, dolphins and bait fish the tuna weren’t so hungry but still found a few and had a really good day. This will be our last trip until about the 20th of December due to our holidays.

26th November

We had 4 clients today who were prepared to take a chance on some of my very different ideas about the fishing hear in Gran Canaria and it proved to be very successful. with Frank from Holland, Richard Robinson, D Kenny and Lance Johnston from England catching 21 very big skip jack tuna between them. Most of the fish were over 8k (20lb) and a few were over 11k (25), and with all the fish caught on light tackle it was a really good days fishing. I would like to thank all on board for trusting in my ideas and making it a very enjoyable day.

The boat was chartered today by a couple from Germany and although at times the fishing was a bit slow they managed to catch some good fish. They caught a barracuda and a few sting rats one of which was estimated to weigh about 120k ( 250 ).

11th November

We had our first slow day for a while today because of some very difficult conditions, with the currant and the wind in opposite directions making it very difficult to keep the boat in the correct position but still managed to have a good day and caught a sting ray and a barracuda.

10th November

We had a slightly different day today, with 6 fishermen on board it was back to usual with the sting ray rods out, as it is impossible to fish the methods we have for the last few days with so many lines in the water. We still had a very successful day with 4 good sized assorted rays and a couple of barracuda.

8th November

We had another day today with 2 clients, it is amazing the difference it makes when every one on board has time to fish properly. Today we caught 7 barracuda, an Atlantic tuna and a common sting ray of about 100k ( 220lb ) on a greys 11ft uptide rod a diawa millionaire reel and 20lb line, that’s what I call proper sport fishing. Well done guys you worked very hard today and got some very good results.

We had a very good example this morning of our policy to take less people working very well. Our 2 clients had a good day with 4 barracuda caught, about 7 lost, a lot of reef fish and a small eagle ray.

I had to use this picture today so I can prove to you that fishing is not always easy and good fun, sometimes you have to work very hard to catch our sting rays as you can see. A good fun day with a few fish and some really nice clients thanks to every one on board.

We decided to try a different reef today and were pleased with the results. We caught a big angle shark, 4 assorted sting rays and an Atlantic tuna as well as a lot of smaller fish.

4th November

A group of Swedish doctors chartered the boat this morning and although the fishing wasn’t the best we all had a really good time and caught a couple of sting rays and a good sized Atlantic tuna. On the afternoon trip we had our group of Dutchmen on there third and last trip, which proved to be their best. They caught about a dozen moray eels and a big king fish. They also made me realise that I need a bigger bin when they return as we just couldn’t get all the empty cans in the dust bin on board. Thank you guys for three really good fun trips I look forward to seeing you all again soon.

30th October

We had a difficult day today with the wind changing speed and direction constantly and almost no flow in the water at all, but our group of welsh friends had a good day and caught 4 very good sized rays including an enormous butterfly ray. Well done guys I look forward to seeing you all again very soon.

28th October

We had a part charter booked for today. These trips which are exclusive to blue marlin 3 take a maximum of 4 fishermen and are the only trips available in Gran Caneria that can guarantee you will go trolling. Although we have seen a couple of marlin in the last week there seems to be not many hear at the moment so we decided this morning to go in search of some tuna. After a couple of hours we found some good signs with a group of whales loads of dolphins and a lot of birds, then we saw what we had been looking for when a big eye tuna of at least 100k jumped in front of the boat. a short while after we had a hook up from a very big fish which after taking about 300m of line in a mater of seconds from an 80lb reel unfortunately came of the hook and was lost. So we had a good day with plenty to look at and talk about and we came very close to catching a very big tuna, maybe next time.

27th October

A very different day today with not one ray but a lot of other fish including a good sized angle shark.

We were back on the reef today were we had a nice day but once again the fish didn’t show in very good numbers. We did have a lot or reef fish, octopus and an Atlantic tuna. We also did battle with a very big ray for a long time before it managed to escape.

We had another part charter today and with our 4 clients, including that man peter Heineken we off in search of the tuna that we were confident were there. After a few hours and a couple of skip jacks we found what we were looking for and hooked up too 5 albacore tuna, unfortunately 2 fish were lost during the fight but we landed the other three which weighed about 25k (55lb) each. Well done to every one on board for catching these very strong fish on the light rods we were using.

We had another good day on the reef today with 4 big rays and Atlantic tuna but the competition is hoting up between Allan and Trevor as it was Allan who after arguing for half an hour that he was caught on the bottom landed a really enormous round sting ray. Well done Allan lets see what the next trip brings.

No picture of fish today because I had to use this one, as it shows Peter hooked up to another enormous ray. It is a very good example of how much fun fishing can be even for someone like Peter who has fished for years and caught many really big fish including a few boat records on blue marlin 3.

We had good friend and good fisherman Allan Edwards with his son in law Trevor on board today, and they both found some good fish but it was Trevor who won the day with a good sized ray. Never mind Allan I am sure will get revenge before the week is over.

Hear we go. We have very good friend and client Peter (Heineken) back for 3 weeks and if I no Peter he will be on the boat every day. We were bottom fishing and what a difference a few days can make, we had a great day with 9 very big red snappers on really light rods, which kept my sister in law Deborah very busy a big ray for birthday boy Trevor and true to form Peter finished the day off with an enormous common ray.

It was Perry’s last day today and we decided to try once more for a marlin without success, we did however have a good day and I would like to thank Perry and his friends for their costume and I look forward to seeing them all again soon. I better add this is a made up picture that Perry has no idea that I took , I think he might a shock when he sees it.

26th September

With the trolling season slowing down we were disappointed that we missed the opportunity to catch a marlin this morning on a part charter, we did see a marlin behind the lures but the fish would not be fooled and soon disappeared, so there are still some fish hear but not in the excellent numbers we have experienced this year. On the afternoon trip it was our youngest guest who stole the show with a big red snapper.

24th September

We had a full charter this morning and a part charter this afternoon so we had a full day back to trolling. We didn’t find any marlin this morning but we did see some dolphins and whales and caught some skip jack tuna. On the afternoon trip we were treated to a really good show by some dolphins that were only half a mile from the coast and having a great time playing with a few small garfish which undoubtedly end up as dinner but provided us and the dolphins with a lot of fun. Once we managed to drag ourselves away and go fishing it was my sister in law Deborah on holiday who caught a skip jack tuna.

Peter had his last of 3 trips today and although he has had a good time and caught a couple of very big sting rays he really wanted to catch a barracuda. Today his dream came true and although he left it right till the end managed to catch the fish he has always wanted, well done peter look forward to seeing you again soon. Our young client was also very happy with his catch or reef fish and he did catch the live bait Peter needed for his barracuda.

After some reports of tuna by the commercial boats we decided on a long range trip in search of these powerful fish. Unfortunately we were beaten by the weather but not as you would expect we were greeted by a flat calm ocean without as much as a ripple so lovely weather for being out on the boat but not for the fish. We did see a family of pilot whales with a very small baby which is lovely to see but unfortunately no fish.

We were back on the reef today and found some very big rays and 2 very big turtles one of them weighing about 450lb, so not to many fish but every thing we caught was very big.

16th September

Our first trip today was on the reef were he haven’t been for some time because of the strong current so we didn’t know what to expect. We found the conditions were ok and there was plenty of bait fish for the barracuda and Atlantic tuna, probably because we are a bit rusty after the trolling season we managed to miss good contacts from about 7 barracuda on live baits while float fishing, but did catch some big rays, snappers and a lot of reef fish. In the afternoon we went trolling for skip jacks and found a few good sized fish.

13th September

We were marlin fishing this morning on a charter and although there had been no reports of any fish for a few days we never had to wait to long before a very big fish turned up behind the lures. This fish seemed more nosey than hungry and spent about 5 minuets inspecting and almost playing with the lures. Twice it grabbed different lures taking a few meters of line but then it was gone. The afternoon trip was aimed more at skip jacks and we had some good fun with plenty of these tough little tuna on light tackle.

The past couple of days has been very quiet for us with only some small melba and Atlantic tuna, but we have been seeing a lot of whales so maybe this a good sign for the return of some big tuna. On both trips today we caught some good sized skip jacks so lets hope its the start of better things to come.

We had Wim and his friends back today for there second charter in three days and after there success with a marlin on Friday expectations were high. We started the day trolling but after 3 hours of no action we decided to try bottom fishing which was also slow but we did catch a big king fish. Better luck next time lads but I suppose 2 marlin in 3 trips cant be bad. Look forward to seeing you all again soon.

We had Wim Moens and friends on there first charter today and after their success earlier in the year when they caught our first blue marlin of this season we were hoping for a repeat performance. Would you believe it at exactly 1 o’clock he hooked a marlin and after about an hour and a half we released another enormous marlin which we estimated to weigh 400k – 880lb. Well done guys see you again Sunday.

We decided on an easy and relaxed day today and went looking mainly for skip jacks with light rods. It turned to be a good day with 5 very big skip jacks. The plan seemed to go wrong when an 80lb rod screamed off and we were all surprised to find a 7k tuna hanging on a 13in marlin lure, obviously a very ambitious little fish.

We were trolling today and it seems like over night loads of small Dorado’s have arrived, which is bad news for them but maybe good news for us as these small fish are the main food for marlin and big tuna so lets see what turns up to feed these little fish.

We had a full charter this morning with our guests Hans and Tanja Blaak from Holland. Although we never caught the blue marlin they wanted we did see a very big one of about 300k jump clear of the water less than 10m from the boat. We did have 2 big skip jack tuna ( 7k or 15lb ) at the same time. This was Tanjas first ever fish and she made an excellent job of fighting this extremely strong fish. Well done to you both and thank you for a very nice day. We look forward to seeing you again soon.

29th August

Where have all the fish gone, it was a very slow day today in the competition and between the 34 boats there were only 2 white marlin and 2 blue marlin caught, this is so annoying when this year up until now has been very good. It does mean that on the last day tomorrow any of the boats could win if some fish turn up.

27th August

The fishing was a bit slow today but we did find some skip jack on the way to the reef and when we got we had a good sized barracuda.

After a few days off for some repairs and antifouling it was back to work in search of a marlin and this time it all went to plan, with a proper photo of a fish in the water where it should be and a lovely photo of our proud fishing couple with a tag and release flag and a certificate on its way from the bill fish foundation. Chantal and Ruud fought the fish between them and it was estimated to weigh about 300 lb.

15th August

The boat was chartered today so off we went in search of a marlin and following the pattern for this year we found a big one. This is a very hard day for me because after a very hard fight of approximately 2 hours the fish decided to dive very deep ( about 600m ) and died, As much as I enjoy fishing for and catching these magnificent fish I hate to be responsible in any way for one dieing. This is the first picture of a dead marlin on this web site and hopefully it will be the last. This was a big fish which when weighed was 340k ( 750lb ) and when fish this big decide to dive it is impossible to stop them. So far this year we have successfully released 5 fish bigger than this one and some slightly smaller. I am getting to personal hear when I should be congratulating the angler and crew on this tremendous catch so well to all involved. It is very common to see fish like this hanging in the Canary islands as all the other boats think nothing of killing these fish and only a few boats participate in any form of tag and release and even then its for advertising and not for the benefit of the fish.

4th August

With 2 part charters booked for today we were fairly confident that we would get at least 1 marlin because of the good numbers of fish that have been showing. We should no better by now because fish of any kind never play by the rules and although we saw a couple of fish we ended the day with only skip jack tuna. Tomorrow we will try again.

2nd August

On our part charter today our 4 fishermen including Freak were hoping for action. Freak has been very unlucky this year and has been on the boat while we have been fighting 4 marlin but none have come to his rod he is however a very good camera man and is responsible for some of the excellent photos we have. Although we saw 2 marlin jumping and had 1 short contact there was no real action this morning. With only 1 trip left on Tuesday Freak really needs to get lucky but we will do our best for him. We had a 4 hour jigging trip this afternoon, although these trips are usually in the winter because of the strong currents we sometimes get in the summer making jigging very difficult we decided to give it a try but the results were disappointing with only one hook up but from a very big fish which refused to be brought to the surface and after a short but very hard fight the line parted and the fish was lost.

1st August

We had 2 part charters today and with Bernd and Freak on this morning we were ready for some more action and action we got. Again it was the shared rod and this time it was that man Bernd who was in the chair. With no warning and straight out of the blue (this must be where the saying comes from) a huge marlin took the lure from below at full speed and came straight out of the water by a considerable distance. This was without a doubt the biggest fish we wad seen this year and was well over 450k. During the whole time it took to clear the other rods and get Bernd settled in the chair this huge fish never stopped jumping at one stage doing a series of about 6 jumps straight towards the boat. It is extremely difficult trying to get control of such a big fish with a very bad attitude when it wont stay in the water and after almost minuets of continual jumping the fish landed on the line and broke free so very disappointing for us all particularly Bernd but we were treated to an amazing display by an enormous fish. Unfortunately that was the end of the action for the day but we will be back tomorrow.

Another difficult day for us today with all the marlin hear at the moment we had 2 trips today both booked for bottom fishing but our clients were very happy with their day out and caught some nice sting rays (12 ) and some small reef fish.

30th July

After our great success of 3 marlin in 5 trips we were hoping today to make it 4 from 6. Our first trip today was booked for bottom fishing which is very difficult when you know there are so many marlin out there but our policy to give our clients what that they want is important to us. It was a successful trip with every one catching something and we finished with 6 assorted rays some lizard fish and 3 turtles.
The afternoon trip was a part charter, on these trips we take a maximum of 4 fishermen and fish with 9 rods to give our clients the best opportunity available to catch there dream, fish without paying for a full charter. Our clients were Bernd and Roland from Holland along with petr from the check republic. While sitting watching the lures and talking which is how you spend most of the time while trolling I was shocked to see a huge bow wave caused by an enormous fish travelling very fast straight at the lure on rod no 7 which is the rod that we share. Although it seemed like slow motion probably within 2 seconds the rod had bent in half and line was streaming from the reel. At this point in the trip this rod was the property of Petr Popik who is a guide and bailiff on a cat fish fishery in the check republic. So we got him in the chair and the fight began. This was a truly enormous and very angry fish but after about an hour of very hard work by Petr the fish was at the back of the boat. This is the tricky bit, with the double line safely on the reel and just as I touched the leader the fish shook its head, the hook came out and the fish almost without a care in the world just swam away, so officially this is classed as a capture but I must admit I felt a bit cheated and very disappointed that I didn’t get to hold and tag this super fish.

A nice Blue Marlin

A nice Blue Marlin

29th July

Another success today for the blue marlin 3. The lucky fisherman today was John Theunissen from Holland but I don’t think he thought he was very lucky after 45 minuets in the chair he was exhausted and needed a lot of encouragement to finish the fight, a lot of people have no idea just how tough these fish are, after just over an hour John had won a tough battle and a good fish of 650lb was tagged and released. It only took a couple of hours and a few beers until john had recovered. Well done John I am sure that’s one fish you will never forget.

28th July

After a well deserved day off yesterday it was back to work and what a start. With 3 of our very regular clients, Bernd, Freak and Laef we were hoping for plenty of action and we never had to wait long until we had a double strike from 2 blue marlin so with Laef in the chair it was Bernd who was fighting his fish standing up. After about 15 minuets unfortunately Laefs fish was lost so we got Bernd into the chair not a moment to soon for Bernd and after another 40 minuets of fighting he was rewarded with his first blue marlin, a nice fish of about 200k-425lb which was of course successfully tagged and released. Congratulations Bernd on the capture of a very well deserved fish your certificate will soon be on its way from the billfish foundation.

26th July

With a lot of fish hear at the moment all the boats left this morning knowing that any body with luck on their side could win the competition. Once again a lot of fish showed up with 11 blue marlin and 1 white marlin being caught today. Willem Scheffers and friends that had chartered the boat for the competition 3 days were a little unlucky as we seemed to spend the whole day watching boats very close to us hooking marlin. Over all it was a very successful competition with 26 marlin between 33 boats, our position at the finish was 8 overall and second of the charter boats.

25th July

After a very successful day yesterday with a lot of fish everyone left this morning knowing they still had a good chance. Unfortunately for us we seemed to return to our tricks of last week with 2 failed contacts from blue marlin and perhaps even more disappointing a white marlin although seeming interested and following a lure for some distance refused to take it. Over all a quieter day than yesterday with 4 marlin being released but there are still a lot of fish out there as most of the boats reported missed contacts or sightings of blue marlin. Tomorrow is another day lets hope the fish are still there and go and win this competition.

24th July

Today was the first day of the annual 3 day pourto rico fishing competition and with 33 boats entered we were all hoping the marlin were ready to eat. This year for the first time ever the size limits and points system are geared towards releasing the fish which is excellent news for the fish and us at blue marlin 3. This is the first time that you can get more points for releasing a fish than you get for killing one unless the fish is over 300k. Because unlike all the other boats our tag and release policy is for the benefit of the fish and not to increase profits or win prizes we are now competing on a level pitch. In the past we had to catch twice the amount of fish as anybody else to have a chance of winning. For the 3 days of the competition the boat has been chartered by 4 Dutch clients and the first day was a great success all round with 11 blue marlin being caught and released between the 33 boats. On a day when all the fish had to be released every one was hoping for small fish as the points are same regardless of size and for most boats this was the case, but not us, just after lunch we hooked a big marlin, with most of the fish today weighing between 100k and 150k and delt with quickly (aprox 30 mins) it was only us who had to battle for well over an hour with a fish of over 250k but I suppose if you go fishing you might as well catch a big one. This is the first fish our client has ever caught and he had no idea how hard he was going to have to work but he made an excellent job of it despite being shouted at slapped by his friends and ordered what to do for the whole time, well done congratulations on catching such a magnificent fish. Hopefully tomorrow you can do the slapping.

At last today we managed to hook a marlin but still not quite well enough as after a run of about 500m and a 15 minuet workout for our young client the fish managed to escape, very bad luck for the young man as I no he had been dreaming about catching a marlin for a long time, maybe next time.

As you can see we make our clients have a good time whatever fish they catch. Although we had another disappointing day with the marlin we did find some small Atlantic tuna, I think these little fish are the reason the marlin are not hungry.

21st July

Although we are getting 1 or 2 contacts from marlin every day we see to be having trouble hooking one properly, all the other boats report the same story which can only indicate that the fish are not really hungry and mealy playing with the lures, hopefully this will change in time for the competition which starts on the 24th. We did have some fun today with dolphins and some small Atlantic tuna as well as a fair sized skip jack.

20th July

After yesterdays poor show we were glad that both trips today were trolling. Only about half an hour into the trip this morning we had a good contact from a blue marlin but after a run of about 50m the fish dropped the lure and was gone. After checking and repositioning the lure we never had to wait long before we had another contact on a different rod, the same thing happened again but this time after about 100m, these fish can be so frustrating. On the afternoon trip we saw a lot of dolphins and some tuna jumping a short distance in front of us but when we arrived at the scene the tuna had dropped back into the depths, and although we tried, the fish refused to return to the surface. We did manage to catch 2 Atlantic and a skip jack.

19th July

Both our trips today were booked as bottom fishing which was a bit of a worry because the bottom fishing for the last few weeks has been quite poor. We had my friend Bernd Jan on both trips and he got the day off to an excellent start by catching a barracuda of about 15lb in the first 15 minuets. Unfortunately it was a good start to an ordinary day and although there were plenty of reef fish the only other fish worth a mention were a couple of good sized rays.

18th July

After a for us a rare blank day yesterday we made up for it today with plenty of skip jacks and a more positive run from a marlin. The marlin was on unlucky Bernds rod and although we had time to get him in the chair and see some spectacular jumps (by the fish not Bernd!!) the fish was soon gone so another good but unlucky day for my friend.

17th July

We had a strange day today and spent nearly the whole day dolphin and whale watching we just couldn’t find the end of them. Although they are nice to see they can be very frustrating when you are trying to find fish. So the only action we had today was from a playful but certainly not hungry marlin and one missed contact from a skip jack.

16th July

We had two part charters today and on both trips all our clients caught at least two fish each, this is impossible on any other trip on any boat in Puerto rico but by only taking four clients we can make it a reality. With good friend and regular client Bernd Yan and Tim on this morning it was always going to be fun. Bernd is probably the most unlucky fisherman in the world, he is good and does every thing correctly but struggles to catch fish and today was no exception, while every one was catching skip jack tuna the first three that Bernd hooked came of the hook while being lifted into the boat but he got there in the end. There seems to some marlin around but they are not in a very aggressive mood as was proved again today by another very half hearted contact maybe its because there are a lot of skip jacks and the marlin are having it to easy at the moment. The afternoon trip was much the same and Mick from my home town in Essex had some good fun with these tough little tuna. thank you to every one on the boat today we had two really good fun trips.

After yesterdays success I must admit that we were a little disappointed that the family that had chartered the boat for today decided that they wanted to go bottom fishing. As we at blue marlin put our clients wishes first off we went to the reef where we all had a very enjoyable day and caught some good sized sting rays and a moray eel. Thank you Leon we look forward to seeing you again in November.

14th July

We had another part charter today so it was off trolling in search of a marlin, and we came very close as a short time into the trip a marlin appeared behind one of the lures, there is nothing like this for getting your heart racing. The fish had three very half hearted lunges at a very big lure taking 2 or 3 meters of line each time, then the fish disappeared but within seconds it took a different lure and pulled about 50m of line from the reel before it disappeared for good. With every one now in a very expectant mood we continued the trip and it wasn’t long before we had some more action. We had spent some time investigating some suspicious looking birds when we hooked up three obviously good sized fish unfortunately one was lost quite quickly but the others turned out to be albacore tuna of 40lb each. These are the first albacore tuna to be caught hear this year by anybody and it also means that we have now caught 6 different species of tuna this year and were the first boat to catch yellow fins, big eyes and albacore. Congratulations to every body on board today.

12th July

We were trolling today on one of our part charters. On these trips, to give our clients more chance of catching a fish we take a maximum of 4 fishermen and fish with 9 rods. As more people get to hear about these trips they are becoming very popular unfortunately no body has told the fish and although we did see a marlin and a lot of over fed skip jacks we ended the day with only one of the smallest tuna species, a melba tuna. Lets hope tomorrows trip brings our clients more success.

11th July

We started the last day the tournament with our famous ice hockey coach Hans Zach on board again hoping to finish the job that he started twice yesterday. this however was not to be and apart from 1 very quick contact we and all the other boats had a very slow day.
I would like to thank Hans and wish him luck in the coming hockey season and I am sure it wont be long before we see him again, maybe next time we can realise his dream.
I would also like to thank the Royal fishing club and wish them continued success with all the good work they do with children

10th July

On board today we had the German national ice hockey coach Hans Zach. What a start within 15 minuets of leaving the harbour we had a double strike from blue marlin. One fish was gone almost as quick as it came but the other appeared to be well hooked so with Hans in the chair and all the other lines out of the way the fight began. this was obviously a very big fish as with a very strong and fit Hans and as much pressure as we dare apply the first run took over 600m of line. We continued to play the fish for just over an hour and got to within 50m before the fish through the hook and won its freedom. There appeared to be no reason for this loss but on inspecting the lure we found that there was no marks or damage at all indicating that the fish was only very lightly hooked. We continued the trip trying to console Hans but being a true sportsman he realises you cant always win. We had only just started the trip so still had plenty of time for another marlin and at 3 o’clock we saw one behind the lures, it moved between the lures as if it was trying to decide which to take then bang it grabbed a lure on a 50lb rod and when it realised it had made a big mistake the fish screamed of at incredible speed, at about 400m from the boat it made some spectacular jumps, unfortunately during this acrobatic display the fish landed on the line and broke it so the fish was gone. An incredibly unlucky day for Hans who has dreamt about catching a marlin for years and today was in the chair twice and through no fault of his own both were lost.

9th July

On this the first day of the tournament the results were very disappointing because although there were a lot of sightings and contacts none of the 4 boats caught a marlin. Hopefully tomorrow will be better.

8th July

We had a bottom fishing trip today so off we went a little bit concerned because the fishing has been pretty poor for a couple of weeks now. Although the fishing was not the best we have had we did manage to catch a few good sized sting rays and some reef fish.
Tomorrow we start a 3 day fishing festival organized by the German Royal fishing club who do an amazing amount of work for under privileged children encouraging them to fish as they feel like me that fishing is way of life not just a hobby and it can make you into a much better person. The club is supported by a lot of famous people including various sports men, pop stars, models etc. There are 4 boats involved and it has been organized by the bluemarlin3. With some reports of marlin sightings over the last few day lets see what tomorrow brings.

7th July

After a well deserved day off it was back to work today looking for another marlin and with 3 Irish clients on a part charter we were not disappointed as about 90 minuets in to the trip we had a double strike from 2 blue marlin. Very bad luck for Will as after only about 2 or 3 minuets the fish he was fighting managed to throw the hook and was gone, which left us with one on the hook unfortunately but probably due to the erratic work buy the angler in the chair the fish made a series of spectacular jumps and managed to turn and land on the line causing it to break so this fish was also lost, so an exiting but very disappointing afternoon.

5th July

It was the second charter with James Rasmussen our famous Danish rock star today and after some reports of marlin contacts yesterday we left the harbour in a very hopeful mood. After a short while our hopes were fulfilled with a very fierce hook up from a big dorado, within seconds another rod buckled and a white marlin leapt out of the water, so we were now fighting a big dorado and a very angry white marlin. Unfortunately the marlin had taken a very small lure on a 30lb rod and after a very fast run of about 200m the small hook pulled out of the fish so bad luck but James was still fighting his dorado which weighed in at 11k or 23lb. After lunch while we were talking about what could have been with the white marlin, a blue marlin appeared behind one of the small lures on a 50lb rod but after a short run the line went slack and the fish was gone but not for long and the outrigger on the opposite side of the boat was hit very hard and the fish was on. So with James who is very nearly 71 years old but very fit settled in the chair the battle began. With only 1 half hearted jump about 400m from the boat we had not seen the fish so had no idea how big it was, but as the fight went on we realised this was a very big fish. James really showed us the meaning of hard work and stamina as the fight lasted 2 hours and 45 minuets, when we eventually got the fish to the back of the boat the size of it amazed every one onboard and even after such a long fight the fish was still very strong and was successfully tagged and released, we estimated the weight at 370k or 820lb but on arriving back in the harbour and seeing a fish that had been brought in and weighed at 120k I think our fish was a lot bigger than we thought as I am quite sure that the fish I had been holding on to an hour before could easily have eaten the smaller one, a real monster. Well done James you really deserved a look at that wonderful fish I look forward to trying with you again at the end of the week.

We had good friend and client James Rasmussen back today for the first of 2 charters. James is a very famous Danish pop star from the 1950s and is still working very hard to this day. His ambition on this holiday is to catch a white marlin to complete his billfish hat trick, so of we went searching but all we managed to find for James was a dorado and a skip jack tuna. There was however 1 marlin released today and 3 other sightings by private boats which is the first reports of marlin for some time so the signs are good, lets hope tomorrow will be good for James.

3rd July

It was back to bottom fishing today with a bit of trolling to start in search of some skip jacks. The tuna seem have gone and it looks like they took all the bottom fish with them so apart from a few lizard fish it was a very slow day.

2nd July

We had Richard for his last day today and once again he was joined by Yvette and Dave so we were hoping for a repeat performance of Sunday when they had a great day catching big eye tuna. When Yvette turned up this morning we realised how much of a battle she had with those tuna as she was covered in bruises from fighting the fish. Unfortunately you cant catch fish of a lifetime every day and today was no exception and although we had good and memorable day we managed to catch only the 2 smallest tuna species, melba and Atlantic tuna. Thank you for your custom and I look forward to seeing you all again very soon.

1st July

Once again we went in search of tuna but found only whales, dolphins and birds but on returning closer inshore we had a hook up from a good sized dorado which unfortunately managed to escape just behind the boat but we still weren’t finished as when we were well on the way back in we raised a white marlin which although it seemed quite interested in our lures couldn’t be tempted, maybe tomorrow.

30th June

We went in search of the tuna again today but on the way we saw some smaller fish and spent some time having fun with them on lighter rods where we caught 4 north Atlantic tuna and 3 skip jack tuna. On arriving at our destination once again we found a huge pod of pilot whales and dolphins but unfortunately couldn’t tempt the tuna which we are sure were there to take our lures. Once again a very memorable and enjoyable day.

29th June

With the marlin fishermen gone today and some very important local knowledge from our experienced captain it was time for a new plan, and what a plan it turned out to be, we went further offshore than we have been so far this year in search of some big tuna. On arriving at our destination we found some huge fin whales and a lot of birds, being confident that fish would also be present we stayed in the area for some time and according to plan up came the fish. We hooked up 5 big eye tuna. It was that man Richard who proved to be the star of the show catching a fish of 47k – 105lb on an 80lb rod and then another of 53k – 120lb on a 50lb rod, Richard was fighting fish for over 90 mins and did the whole show standing up. Our English couple Dave and Yvette were very unlucky particularly Yvette who having played a fish for nearly an hour got her line broken by another fish which Dave had also been fighting a long time. Although her fish was not boated it had been to the boat and I had touched the leader so in sport fishing rules this is classed as a capture. Dave’s fish was also clearly in view and close to the boat when it managed to through the hook and gain its freedom, so very unlucky to you both.

Another part charter today with 100% marlin fishermen, but with 1 exception, Richard from Holland who has booked 6 days with us and wants to catch a marlin but is also happy to try other options. this was a great success today when on the way out we spotted some skip jack tuna and Richard quickly adapted his tackle and was rewarded with a good sized fish. Unfortunately the marlin didn’t show up again but a couple of sightings were reported by other boats so maybe tomorrow.

We had another part charter today and another advantage of only taking 4 people is we are able ask the clients about there preferences for fishing and today they all decided to fish only for marlin and maybe the bigger species of tuna. these fish have not put in an appearance for a couple of weeks now and we are expecting there return any day unfortunately it was not today.

25th June

What a day we had today with almost constant laughter for the whole trip. It was another bottom fishing trip but once again we were distracted on the way and caught 9 good sized tuna. I had to include the picture of our Irish friend, she really did love that fish.

It was our last charter to day for our Dutch clients and we had another very successful trip with some very happy clients. Once again we got off to fairly slow start but with something to keep us interested all the time in the shape of dolphins, whales, birds and tuna. We ended the day with 7 skip jacks, these sporting, tough little fish are really keeping us going while we are waiting for the marlin to return hopefully very soon.

We had another bottom fishing trip booked for today which with resent reef fishing results we were not very confident of much success. However as with all fishing you never really know what is going to happen next, on the way to the reef we saw good signs of tuna so decided to try for them with good results and after an hour or so with some good fish onboard we went to the reef where unfortunately our earlier fears were correct and we found the fishing very slow, so once again the day was saved by some nice skip jack tuna.

We had the first of private charters with 4 Dutch clients today. I am surprised they found the time in between football matches. Although the results were not as good as yesterday we did catch some skip jack tuna and were very unlucky when a very angry blue marlin attacked one of the lures with incredible force but managed to miss getting hooked. Maybe we will find it again on Sunday.

What can I say our 4 English clients had a great day today on one of our exclusive part charters. The day started with some skip jack tuna and 3 out of 4 clients caught some, poor old mat, although doing nothing wrong managed to loose 3. We continued the trip with many sightings and contacts which resulted in a dorado of just over 20lb for Mick Nut and another of just under 30lb for Mark Bowman. A very good and enjoyable day and I am sure it wont be long before we see all these clients again. Thank you guys and congratulations on some good fishing.

Trolling again today and what a good day we had with friendly happy clients and some good fish. 12th June

We had a short 4 hour charter today and although our 3 guests never actually caught any fish we had a very good time and were very unlucky. We saw a lot of activity with birds, dolphins and skip jack tuna witch didn’t seem to be hungry but seemed to have good fun pecking at and playing with the lures, we also had a very ferocious take from a Wahoo witch destroyed a lure in one bite. So we had a very busy day but with no actual success, that’s fishing as they say hear, heartbreaking I call it.

11th June

Our clients today booked a bottom fishing trip which after our last reef trip was a bit worrying but things turned out very well and although we never had loads of fish the ones we did catch were very good quality. In total we had 4 very good sized sting rays an angle shark and a boat record for a very rear electric ray. Well done to every body onboard and thank you for your custom.

It was back to trolling today on a part charter where we take a maximum of 4 fishermen and share 9 rods. These trips are proving to be a great success and are very popular with fishermen who want to actually catch fish instead of watching other people catch them. Today was an excellent example and our 4 guests had a good time catching 2 good sized Wahoo with the largest one going to Paul Bailey from England.

We had a slow day on the reef today with very poor results from the fishing but still an enjoyable day with some good company. We have no excuses the drift was good the position was good there just didn’t seem to be any fish, lets hope for better fortune tomorrow.

On day 2 of there charter it was very a different story with action almost as soon as we left the harbour and Hans and his sons managed to catch 11 good sized skip jack tuna and a nice dorado, well done guys and thank you for your custom. It was the first of 2 charters today for Hans Kagchelland and with only 4 very brief contacts from skip jack tuna and Dorado’s unfortunately it was a fairly uneventful trip. Lets hope they have more success tomorrow.

5th June

It was round 2 today with the 5 crazy Scotchmen and we got of to much better start with a good sized skip jack within 1 hour of leaving the harbour. soon after we hooked a very big dorado but after a short fight this fish was lost. later in the day we decided to try reef fishing but unfortunately this was not much better than the trolling and we managed to catch only a few weavers, puffer fish and reef fish. Sorry about the results guys but that can happen as we all know only to well. thank you for being such good fun and I know the fish can only get better next time, see you again soon.

It was the first of 2 charters today for our group of Scottish friends returning from last year. Before we left the harbour it was obvious it was going to be a good day weather we caught any fish or not as the are all a bit mad and very funny people. The fishing turned out to be very slow with not much activity of any kind except 1 hook-up which we managed to loose, but that’s what can happen when you are trolling and trying to catch that once in a life time fish. We still all had really good time and will be back trying again tomorrow.

We were trolling today on one of our exclusive part charters, which are becoming very popular as more people realise the enormous benefits which we can guarantee to our clients. This was proved today when unfortunately there were no marlin reported anywhere but we did catch some skip jack tuna. On any other fishing trip available in grand canaria the best you can hope for is the use of 1 rod, which will be suitable for either marlin and big tuna or small tuna, Dorado’s etc. We can guarantee the use of 2 rods for your whole trip which are suitable for any species of fish we are likely to encounter. So congratulations to our clients today and I hope the tuna tasted ok Oliver.

31st May

After the excitement of yesterday we were back on the reef today for a bottom fishing trip. We are the only boat that does bottom fishing through the summer because instead of going glory hunting every day we are prepared to do what our clients want and we do have a lot of clients that prefer reef fishing. To a lot of people who don’t realise we spend a lot of time on the reef our catch results while trolling are not fairly judged, but I assure you that already this year our results when compared to the hours spent fishing are as good or better than any boat in purto rico.
As you can see we had a very happy young man on the boat today along with his granddad. We caught some good red snappers and a few assorted sting rays.

30th May

We left the harbour this morning with a grope of three Dutch clients on a full charter hoping once again for that blue marlin. Within 1 mile of the harbour and before we even had all the rods in the water we had a contact from a Wahoo which although managing to bite lumps out 0f the lure managed to miss the hooks. We then spent a couple of hours searching the ocean when at just before 1 o’clock the unbelievable happened and we hooked 3 blue marlin at the same time. The first to strike but only by seconds was a huge fish certainly the biggest marlin I have ever seen which did a series of jumps about 150m behind the boat but by this time there were 2 more marlin hooked up and unfortunately one of these fish cut the line connected to the big one. Another fish was lost after a few minuets which left us with one angry marlin on a 50lb rod which had taken a small lure designed for skip jack tuna or Dorado’s. As you can imagine that few minuets was a bit frantic but we soon got every thing under control and about an hour later after some hard work we managed to tag and release a blue marlin of about 260k or 550lb. So congratulations to Thierry Dortu on catching his first blue marlin. There will be a certificate on its way from the billfish foundation soon.

28th May

We had another part charter booked for today so we were trolling again in search of that elusive blue marlin. Unfortunately all we managed to find were a lot of overfed Dorado’s that were obviously not hungry, maybe next time.

27th May

We decided this morning to try a more distant reef but with only 20m of water to try and make the fishing more practical with the strong currants we have at the moment. Due to the distance we decided to try trolling for Wahoo for a couple of hours on the way but with no success. On the reef we caught a lot of see breams and a good sized angle shark. We also had a group of 3 Wahoo swimming round the boat for about an hour but they were not interested in anything we offered them.

26th May

We were back on the reef today after a 3 day break and what a difference we found, the currant has got even stronger and there was a real lack of fish, so although having a pleasant day with some good company and excellent weather we struggled to catch only mackerel and some reef fish. Maybe we will make a new plan for tomorrow.

On the last of our three charters this we decided to try a different area where we found a lot of skip jack tuna, some bigger tuna species and more Dorado’s along with a lot of dolphins and some really nasty weather which gave us quite a battering for 2 hours on the way back to the harbour.

24th May

After yesterdays success we set out today with big expectations, unfortunately this was not to be and the only fish being sighted were a school of Dorado’s which were harassing some small fish living in the shelter of a discarded carpet. Although we spent some time trying we were unable to encourage the fish to take our lures.

23rd May

Ildefonso Garcia and his wife had there first of three charters today and what a day it was. There was quite a lot of action with birds and small fish but the best action came when we hooked a white marlin which resulted in the first billfish for our client. The fish was estimated to weigh about 40k and was of course tagged and released. This was the second to be released by us this year and unfortunately these are the only 2 of about 12 white marlin caught in Gran Canaria that have been released. Maybe tomorrow we will find a blue marlin.

On the reef today we found some sting rays, snappers and an Atlantic tuna. With the current increasing all the time I don’t think we will be able to fish on this reef for much longer. There were a lot of bill fish sightings and contacts on the other boats today which we are hoping is good news for our 3 charters over the weekend.

21st May

We were trolling today and with some good reports of fish sightings over the last few days we set off with high hopes. Although we had a good day and saw flying fish, dolphins and some dorados we never managed to entice any fish to take our lures. Lets hope we have more success on our 3 charters over the weekend.

20th May

The sting rays returned to the reef today in good numbers. We had 7 today and lost a couple of really big ones which for some reason always tend to come on the lightest rods, along with the rays we also had about a dozen red snappers and some mackerel.

19th May

After a couple of days away from the reef we returned there again today hoping for an improvement in the conditions and we were not disappointed. We had some really good snappers, mackerel and some rays. There was also some good news on the trolling front with a lot of reports of marlin and dorado sightings so things are looking good for our 4 trolling trips later this week.

We were trolling today on one of our exclusive part charters which are becoming very popular with all you fishermen out there who actually want to catch a fish. With our unrivalled fish catching record and the fact that we fish with 9 rods and a maximum of only 4 fishermen we are able to offer our clients a far more realistic opportunity to catch a fish than any other boat can even imagine.
This proved to be the case today when our Dutch client Klass Westra caught his first marlin after many years of trying all around the world. Well done Klass, this beautiful white marlin of about 100lb was tagged and released and a certificate from the bill fish foundation will soon be on its way to Klass in Holland.
We at blue marlin 3 and I am sure a lot of you fishermen think this is a much better keep sake than a picture of a dead fish hanging on the boat.
Unfortunately we seem to be the only people on the island that think like this because although there are a lot of fish hear at the moment [ so far this year to our knowledge there have been 8 white marlin and 10 blue marlin caught ] the fish we caught today is the only one that has been released.
I find it very sad that all the boats claim to be members of the bill fish foundation and they all advertise tag and release but all this advertising is only aimed at attracting clients and increasing profits and shows no regard or respect for the fish. As we put the wishes of our clients first and a lot of people prefer bottom fishing to trolling we still do some days in the marlin season bottom fishing, unlike the other boat owners and skippers who are trolling every day with no regard for their clients wishes but only for the glory of being able to catch and usually kill a marlin.

15th May

After a day trolling yesterday it was back to the reef this morning, after the difficult conditions we have had to put up with all week, this morning when we left the harbour every thing seemed perfect. It was not until we anchored the boat we discovered that the ocean had decided to move in the opposite direction making our methods of fishing very difficult. Despite this we still had a good day with some happy clients who managed to catch a good sized angle shark, a couple of rays, some snappers and a few very big mackerel.

With our 4 ambitious clients we set off this morning trolling in the hope of catching a blue marlin unfortunately this didn’t happen but I suppose you cant expect to catch the fish of a lifetime every time you go fishing, but with another part charter booked on Saturday we will be trying, hoping and yes I suppose expecting to catch one of these magnificent fish. With some encouraging reports of fish sightings today including, lost hook ups and 1 fish being caught and released today by a boat from another harbour (well done Antonio) we remain confident that it wont be long before one of our clients enters the marlin hall of fame.

13th May

A slight improvement in the conditions and the fishing today and with a boat full of happy clients before we even left the harbour it was always going to be a good day even if we never caught any fish. We did however catch some fish including 4 rays, a lot of big mackerel, an octopus and some very big snappers 1 of which was over 9lb. Tomorrow we will be trolling on one of our exclusive part charters and with reports of some blue and white marlin as well as some good sized Dorado’s being seen in the last few days we can only hope the fish are hungry.

It was back to the reef today where although the fishing was a bit slow at times we did catch some good quality fish. We caught a big angle shark, a few assorted rays and some red snappers.

It was back trolling today on one of our exclusive part charters where we go trolling with 9 rods and a maximum of only 4 fishermen so that we can guarantee that every fisherman has the use of 2 rods for the whole trip. This proved to be very successful for Gordon who is currently living in Berlin as he caught a very good sized Dorado, Well don Gordon we will no doubt see you again very soon.

Herman had booked a privet charter today and decided to try a day trolling in the hope of catching a blue marlin, unfortunately the marlin didn’t show but you cant expect to catch these magnificent fish on every trip so unlucky Herman better luck next time.

6th May

After yesterdays trolling it was back to bottom fishing on the reef with some good results, we had 9 good sized red snappers as well as a few which we returned and a couple of nice sized eagle rays.

5th May

We were trolling today on one of our exclusive part charters in the hope of catching our first blue marlin of the year. After about an hour we realised that we hadn’t seen a single bird or dolphin and assumed there must be something strange going on somewhere, when in the distance we spotted some activity when we arrived at the location we were treated to an amazing display of wild life. We found a shoal of mackerel about half an ache in size being attacked by, at least 3 big whales, so many dolphins that its difficult to even try and guess the numbers and I think every bird in the north Atlantic was present trying to get a cheep meal. Unfortunately there didn’t seem to be any fish or if there was they certainly weren’t hungry so we finished the day fishless but very happy with the truly unforgettable sights we wad all seen.

3rd May

With our clients deciding to fish for snappers today on the lightest tackle possible we had some exiting sport fishing with about 12 really good sized snappers and an Atlantic tuna.

Rick and his father were back today and they were joined by Laura who was originally from Essex but now lives in Ireland. With a very good atmosphere onboard along with some very good fish we all had an excellent day. Laura who before the trip admitted to hating fish and fishing was soon converted into lifelong fisherwoman by catching an Atlantic tuna, a big red snapper and a mackerel all on a 12ft carp rod. She was by the end of the trip very disappointed that she was going home tomorrow and would not have time to join us again, but I am sure it wont be long before we see her return. In total today we caught 4 Atlantic tuna, 11 red snappers and a very big turtle which we take every care possible to release unharmed. Unfortunately the turtle doesn’t no this and can be very aggressive and dangerous.

We were joined today by regular visitor and friend Herman from Holland on his first of many trips this week. He was with Rick and his father who are also fishing nearly every day of there holiday. Although it wasn’t the best day we have had because the fishing was very difficult due to the lack of flow in the water and the quite strong wind in the wrong direction, we did manage to catch some nice red snappers, Atlantic tuna, a couple of rays and 2 octopuses which was enough to insure every one on board had a good time. Better luck next time.
