After yesterdays hiccup it was back to normal today with some good fishing. Young Jamie Tennant had some fun with a Sting ray and sea bream. We also had 3 more rays, a couple of small smooth hounds, a few really big Sargo (bream) and a lot of reef fish.
On the afternoon trip we had the Fong family, Charlotte caught a Scorpion fish, Lewis caught a Small Silver Thing and dad Lee caught a Broun Moray Eel. We also had Caroline from Scotland on her first fishing trip that did well to catch an Eagle ray on a carp rod. James (with Caroline) had a great time with 2 sting rays of about 35lb and 50lb.

What a day, alter a few days of really good fishing today was a disaster. We went back to the reef where we had great success yesterday and we caught only a couple of small reef fish. On the afternoon trip we went back to the shallower reef but once again the fishing was very slow, we had one small Smooth Hound and Magnus Hall from Sweden caught the only Sting ray of the day.

With the fine weather returning at last we went back to the 60m reef today in search of some different fish. Almost straight away Jac van Peer from Holland caught a good snapper of about 4k, we then had a very good run, probably from an Atlantic tuna that bit the hook off. About an hour into the trip a good sized Dorado appeared at the side of the boat and started eating the free offerings we were putting in, this went on for about an hour with me franticly trying every thing I could think to trick the fish. Eventually after changing hooks and traces loads of times I hooked the fish on a 12ft carp rod and 18lb line. The fight lasted about half an hour and resulted in the capture of a 28lb female Dorado. Bram then caught an Eagle ray and a Common ray, Toon also had an Eagle ray and we finished off with a good sized Sama (like a snapper).

We had a really Amazing day today, it seems that the rough weather has really got the fish feeding. Brian started off with a very big Sargo (black Bream) then it was Brian again with a big Round sting ray. Darren was next with a small Smooth Hound which he soon followed up with a good sized Butterfly ray. Then it was Karl with a common Sting ray, and he also had an Eagle ray. Brian then caught an Eagle ray, at the same time Pete was catching a good sized Round Ray on very light tackle. Darren then caught a very big Common Sting Ray (over 120lb). Karl had a small Eagle Ray which was followed by another fish about the same size for Bill. Even after all this action we saved the best till last and Jackie had some fun with a really nice Smooth Hound. A very good day with very nice people who are all having another go on Thursday so let’s hope for more of the same.

At last we managed to get out fishing again alter a few days that we had to call off because of some strong winds. Although there was still quite a big swell running we managed to anchor on one of our favorite marks and we found some very good fish. I will start with ladies first, Tereza Paulova caught a good sized round ray which helped her forget her sea sickness for a while. Her partner caught a big King fish and was very unlucky to loose a very big one at the side of the boat. Floris Van de Kruk a 12 tear old from Holland was our star for today he caught an Eagle ray and started a fight with a real monster that I had to finish for him. This was a really big fish very close to a new boat record. We estimate the weight at about 165k (365lb). We all had a very nice trip with some really good fish.

It was another very windy day today so we went back to the sheltered mark we fished yesterday. All the clients on board today were from Finland and when we arrived at our mark we found some good fish waiting for us. Young Jaakko started us off with an Angel Shark, Markku was next with a sting ray, Pertty soon followed this with a very big ray (150lb) but this was soon beaten by Riku with an even bigger Common Sting Ray. We hadn’t finished yet and we hooked up an enormous ray which we fought between us for over an hour which is a very long fight considering we were only fishing in 9m of water, before the line just couldn’t take any more and the fish was gone. So we had a successful day with some happy clients.

We were back to work today but we had some horrible weather, with torrential rain all last night and a lot of wind. We were lucky that the rain stopped at the start of the trip but the wind forced us to fish on one of our sheltered marks close in. This not a problem as we often find some very big fish close in. The biggest fish today was caught by Rob Page from the West Country, although he is more used to catching carp he did well to catch a round Sting Ray of about 150lb in less than an hour. His friend Paul Worthington caught a common ray and had a great day. We also caught a very nice turtle and were unlucky to miss some very good bites from more rays and a couple of King Fish.

Firstly I have a quick update on my fishing trip in England, Me and my two mates Mark and Nigel had a really good day out on Nigel’s boat. Between us we caught 2 Thornback rays a dogfish, 11 codling and to many Whiting to count.
Although we were not due to start work until Monday we found some willing clients and decided to have a go today. We have had some horrible weather here for the last couple of days and the water has been really mixed up with the visibility down to just a few meters instead of the normal 15 to 20 m. This did seem to affect the fishing at the start and it was a welcome relief when the rod of Tor Fjaestad screamed off, after a short but hard fight we released a very big smooth hound. After about another hour of no action things really picked up and we had plenty of action for rest of the trip. Richard Jones from Kent hooked into an enormous ray which he fought for nearly half an hour before the fish won, he was rewarded later in the trip with a more sensible sized common ray. Tors son caught a guilt head bream and then Tor had a common ray of about 40k, so it ended up as a very successful trip.

7 December

This is a first for me, an update from England while I am on holiday. Although I am having a great time with my family and friends I couldn’t last 2 weeks without going fishing so I have arranged for a day out on Wednesday (weather permitting). It will be very different for me fishing in a survival suit instead of a pair of shorts, I will let you no how I get on.

We started our annual holiday yesterday but I found the time to take Mike and Pat fishing one last time before I go back to England for a couple of weeks.

After our success last time with 4 good sized king fish we returned to the same place but this time the fish didn’t seem so hungry. We missed a couple of good bites and a big squid dropped the bait as Mike lifted it from the water. I decided to try for a sting ray and it wasn’t long before we hooked a very big fish, with Mike hanging on as much as possible the fish just kept on going. Under as much pressure as possible the fish took over half an hour to take over 200m of line from the reel. Unfortunately with fish this big the odds are on their side and the line eventually parted when the fish found something to swim round, but a good and exiting fight for Mike on his last trip of this holiday.

Big Atlantic Tuna

We were doing ok this morning with a couple of sting rays, 2 missed contacts from amber jacks, plenty of small stuff and for our Danish client who is here on a golfing holiday a big Atlantic tuna. Unfortunately the wind got up and from a difficult angle which meant the boat was constantly moving and it became very uncomfortable.

There seems to quite a lot of Angle sharks about at the moment, we had another one today. The good thing about today’s fish is that was caught on an 8ft light gigging rod and so provided some excellent sport. We also caught a few more fish, including a sting ray, lots of reef fish and a turtle.

Round Ray

It was one of those strange and awkward days today. It started with us not being able to fish the mark we wanted to because the strong wind and currant would have made fishing very difficult and uncomfortable. We moved to another mark, only a couple of miles away where there was no wind at all.

The weather hear can change so quickly and can be very localized. We spent the next 3 hours without a bite but then Pat from the Shetland Isles hooked into an enormous ray which all of us had a fight with before the line couldn’t take any more and the fish was lost. Within minuets my brother in law Steven Sweeny caught a round ray and while we were taking photos another ray was hooked by Roelden from Holland but after a short fight this fish was also lost, but we still weren’t finished and only seconds later Roelden was fighting another fish, an Angle shark which we landed successfully. So it was a very quite day but with half an hour of total chaos at the end of the trip.

After a very quite day yesterday with only some reef fish and a couple of moray eels, we had a much better day today, with some nice rays , an angle shark and our first amber jack of the season, so maybe things will improve from now on.
